Cherokee’s Gavin Guffey – Presented by Farm Credit Western Oklahoma

Cherokee High School junior Gavin Guffey is a four-sport student-athlete and a member of FFA and student council. Guffey said becoming a member of the FFA chapter was natural thanks to coming from a family that is heavily involved in agriculture.

“I first got involved in FFA my 8th grade year, the first year I could take ag. I come from an agricultural family both my parents and my sister were in FFA, so I have always wanted to be in FFA,” said Guffey.

This year Guffey is doing more than just showing livestock.

“I am serving as the Cherokee FFA Treasure this year, part of the environmental natural resource CDE team, shooting clay team and also part of the show team,” Guffey said. “My favorite part about FFA is how close all the kids are in the organization and my favorite thing to do in FFA is either showing swine or sporting clays.”

Guffey has been in the ring showing livestock for several years.

“I have shown animals for seven years now. I have shown pigs every year and I also showed goats for an about three years. I enjoy that pigs a lot more,” said Guffey.

Guffey offers this advice to anyone interested in FFA.

“I would tell them to give FFA a chance a lot of kids don’t join FFA because they think you have to be a farmer, or you have to show animals, but FFA has way more things then just that. You can find something in ag you would like,” said Guffey.

After he graduates from CHS, Guffey plans to attend college at NWOSU to earn a degree in Ag Business and work in his hometown and farm like his father.
