Chisholm Teacher Emily Stuckey – Presented by Rick’s Pharmacy

By Jay Hoberecht

Emily Stuckey is an English teacher at Chisholm High School.  She teaches Senior English, AP Literature, Yearbook and an ACT Prep Class.  She graduated from Phillips University.  She is in her 23rd year of teaching and her sixth at Chisholm High.

Emily, the youngest of four children, found her passion in teaching following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother.  She believes teaching is a calling.  She has been inspired by many teachers but talked about Dr. Kay Fordson at Phillips University making a difference in her teaching career.

Chisholm High Principal Cindy Black and Emily Stuckey have been together at Covington, Enid High School and now Chisholm.  Principal Cindy Black said, “Miss Stuckey is an exceptional teacher, who not only prepares her students for the next test but also prepares them for life. She goes beyond the curriculum, instilling knowledge, confidence and the critical skills needed for success long after high school.”  It doesn’t get better than that.

The Chisholm Yearbook Staff just received a grant for two computers and a camera to help them complete a 128 page yearbook.  Ms Stuckey leads a group of nine students as they learn all the facets of putting together a year of memories for students to enjoy.

Ms Stuckey likes crafting, painting and sewing.  She also calls herself a movie buff liking all movies but the scary ones!  She also told me about her dog, Agatha Christie.  Great dog name for an English teacher who loves teaching literature!  She has a close bond with her dog!  She likes the fact Agatha Christie keeps her active with one or two walks a day.

I asked Emily about what advice she would give a ninth grader entering high school.  She smiled, thought and replied, “follow directions”.  She realizes it is more complicated than that choosing friends and navigating your way from freshman year to senior year.  But, think about it, following directions is a great start!

Ms Stuckey has a student teacher this semester and enjoys seeing her students thrive under someone else’s leadership.  It was evident to me that she loves teaching and is passionate about her career and helping students learn.  The mark of a great teacher!
