Jamie Clark is in her first year as an educator at Seiling High School, but her sixth year total, after teaching at Hilldale and Latta. She teaches 7-12th grade Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS, also known as “Home Ec”). She is also the advisor for FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America).
“We can teach many different topics but this year I am teaching: Hospitality and Tourism, Fashion Design, Leadership Management, FCS Basics and Tween Life,” said Clark.
Clark knew she wanted this career path even when she was a high school student and has a great passion for the work.
“I decided I wanted to be a FCS teacher my senior year in high school. I started taking FCS classes in junior high and got even more involved in classes and FCCLA in high school. I absolutely loved every single subject that I took in FCS. No matter if it is a class about childcare or a class about cooking or sewing, I love it! I knew that it was the only career I could teach everything I loved in one. I also knew the impact that the classes and the organization had on me and I wanted to help other students have that same experience. It has never felt like a job either! Teaching also runs in my family. Numerous family members are teachers, professors or in leadership roles at colleges. My Papa, Pete Byrd, was a Superintendent at Davis Public Schools for 20+ years. His passion for education just kind of rubbed off on me, I guess you could say!”
Clark has multiple aspects of the job she enjoys.
What I enjoy the most about being an educator is seeing students complete a project, compete in a competitive event in FCCLA, or achieve a goal that they set for themselves,” she said. “I have seen students be afraid of speaking in front of others then go to speaking in front of thousands before they graduate. It is so amazing to see them grow and become their own right in front of you! I also enjoy teaching life skills in the classroom, something that is not taught in all schools in today’s time.”
Outside of teaching, Clark loves watching her husband Luke coach basketball (also at Seiling), chase their three-year old son Tripp around, and play pickleball.
