Kamdyn Hulse, a junior student-athlete at Canton High School, represents the Tigers in many forms.
“I participate in track, cross country and basketball,” Hulse said. “I’m also a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, and the Fellowship of Christian athletes.”
Nestled about 45 minutes north of Weatherford and about an hour southwest of Enid, Canton is like any small town in Oklahoma. Everybody knows everybody. When she isn’t on the court or in the classroom, Hulse enjoys spending time with her 5-year old cousin, Kylin.
“Being a part of this community is all I’ve ever known, and the support that comes from such a little town is amazing,” Hulse said. “Winning the Buffalo Tournament with all my teammates and then receiving MVP of the tournament was probably my favorite moment. But I’m excited to see what I can accomplish this year in sports.”
Participating in so many sports and activities comes with a cost, but it’s one that Hulse is willing to pay.
“I’ve learned about the importance of time management, whether it’s being on time for the bus or turning in assignments,” Hulse said. “To me, being a student athlete is a huge responsibility, because I know there are other kids looking up to me, and I would like to set a good example for them.”
It has not always gone so smoothly. Hulse has suffered setbacks in her athletic career, but it’s about how you overcome your circumstances, not how they affect you, that defines you.
“I injured my shoulder during the end of my freshman year and spent the summer resting and going to physical therapy,” Hulse said. “Taking a break from basketball was difficult but I had more time for family and other activities.”
Hulse’s parents have always supported her through highs and lows.
“My biggest motivators are my parents. They have always provided me with anything I ever needed for sports and academics,” Hulse said. “Without them I never would’ve started playing basketball.”
Hulse’s goals include hitting the 1,000-point mark in basketball and winning “many more tournaments” with her team. After high school, she hopes to still be playing sports while working towards a college degree.
