Waynoka’s Daycen Cunningham – Presented by Integris

Sometimes, what makes the biggest impact on your life isn’t a person; it’s realizing that you are making an impact on someone else. For Daycen Cunningham, being able to shadow his coaches and having an impact on the younger generation as they develop into student athletes is what has taught him the most. Daycen is a senior at Waynoka High School. He says that what gets him through the tough times is seeing all of the kids that look up to him and his teammates.

Daycen participates in basketball, football, baseball, track, FCA, and FCCLA. His favorite subject is English because he enjoys seeing how much progress he has made in writing an essay and his writing in general. In his free time, Daycen likes to listen to music, fish, and play basketball. His biggest role model is his grandma. “She has taken care of me since I was born, and has taught me right from wrong,” he says.

Daycen’s favorite sports moment is also the highest in his sports career so far. It was playing in the Class C State Championship. “The teams bond and relationship with the coaches was everything any athlete could ever ask for,” he says. Daycen has been named MVP of the AAU tournament and listed for All-Conference in basketball. In the future, he plans to go to college to study to be an athletic trainer.

Daycen’s uncles were the reason that he started to play sports. He began participating in sports in the second grade. His favorite part about football is the team bond and getting to see the progress from all of the work that he’s put into it. To be a great athlete, Daycen says that it takes hard work, dedication, and a lot of determination. Sports have taught him that “in life, you’re going to get knocked down, but you always have to get back up.” His advice to his fellow athletes is to never give up on their sport, no matter what obstacles life brings.
