When Chisholm High School’s Amelia Alcorn joined her local FFA chapter, she was in the seventh grade. It was a teacher and a family member who encouraged her to join.
“My ag teacher Wayne Simpson was a huge supporter and helped me with everything along the way, but the biggest supporter I have would be my grandfather Joe Haskit. He was an ag teacher, and he grew up on a farm, so he has had to be the biggest impact in my FFA career,” said Alcorn.
Being part of the FFA chapter has been a wonderful journey according to Alcorn. Now a graduate, Alcorn said she’s enjoyed all of the activities FFA has to offer.
“The thing I enjoy the most about being in the FFA is meeting all the new people. You go to different competitions and meet new people. Those are the people that you will keep in touch with for so long. I am in the Chisholm show team and I do different types of inter-scholastics throughout the year,” said Alcorn.
Showing livestock has been a big part of her life for several years.
“Since the seventh grade I have shown goats. I started out showing wether goats and then I moved into showing doe goats. About two years ago I got into the breeding business where I have six doe goats that kid once a year. I then show one of the kids that next show season,” said Alcorn.
Also a member of the fastpitch and slow-pitch softball teams, Alcorn said loves being around her teammates and representing CHS.
“The thing I love most about my teammates is how close we are as a team. We are all like sisters and we know that to play a team we have to be a team. That means not to argue and not to put one another down,” said Alcorn.
The graduate offers this advice to anyone interested in FFA.
“Advice I would give to kids joining the FFA would be to always take advantage of any minute that you have. It flies by so fast. Also never say no to any competition that your ag teacher asks you to do. Take all of the experience you can get from the FFA,” said Alcorn.
